Papua Provincial Government Begins To Develop Potential of Renewable Energy

JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government is now starting to look at the development of Renewable Energy (EBT), which is considered to have the potential to produce large amounts of electricity, in order to encourage the entry of national and international scale industries.

Head of the Energy and Mineral Resources Department (ESDM) of Papua Province, Fred James Boray, said that new innovations must begin to be taken, in order to bring investment and create jobs for the community.

Australia has explored cooperation with Papua Province to develop the potential of hydrogen and ammonia energy as future fuels, in Deiyai Regency.

"The key to success in developing the potential of NRE in Papua requires the readiness of the local government and the readiness of local indigenous peoples as well. So that we can enter the world of modern investment," he said in Jayapura, Tuesday (21/6/2022).

The Energy and Mineral Resources Department of Papua is still developing the use of non-renewable energy sources in the Baliem river, Jayawijaya Regency to encourage industrial-scale hydropower plants (PLTA).

The process of building a hydropower plant in Jayawijaya is still in the research stage. However, it is estimated that the utilization of energy sources can produce electricity with a capacity of 50 to 100 megawatts.

"We'll see what the results of the research will be, we estimate around 50 to 100 megawatts. It can be for one industry to grow there first," he said.

In addition to hydropower, Fred added, now his party is also developing Solar Power Plants (PLTS) in several areas to serve the needs of lighting in villages.

"According to current data, a total of 24 villages in Tolikara, Yahukimo and Waropen Regencies have been developed by the solar power plant," he concluded. ***
