JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government is promoting increasing direct exports of various leading commodities besides wood, including fish, coffee, cocoa, and handicrafts.
Setyo Wahyudi, Assistant for Economic Affairs and Development at the Papua Regional Secretariat, stated that Papua already possesses several export potentials, but not all of them can be shipped directly to their destination countries.
"So far, only wood is regularly exported. In the future, we hope that fish, cocoa, and coffee will follow," he said.
He added that increasing production and quality is key to ensuring sustainable direct exports.
Papua has exported non-wood commodities several times, but these have mostly gone through other regions or ports outside the province.
"That’s why we are pushing for infrastructure improvements and support from relevant agencies," Setyo added.
Meanwhile, data from the Statistic Center Agency (BPS) of Papua revealed that the export value in March 2025 reached USD 5,876.66 million. Of that amount, USD 5,876.50 million consisted of non-oil and gas exports.
Head of BPS Papua, Adriana Helena Carolina, explained that most of the non-oil and gas exports originated from wood and wood products, totaling USD 5,623.66 million.
"The four largest export destination countries for Papua are Australia, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand," she concluded. ***
