JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has confirmed that the re-run of the Regional Head Election (PSU) will proceed despite budget constraints.
Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, emphasized that the government is actively seeking solutions to ensure funding is available without disrupting the region's financial stability.
"We have explained Papua’s fiscal situation to the General Elections Commission. Our regional budget (APBD) is limited, and we are facing financial difficulties. However, since this is mandated by law, the re-election must still take place," he stressed.
To reduce expenses, the Papua Provincial Government has asked the General Elections Commission to implement budget efficiency measures for the re-election.
Several proposed steps include cutting down official travel to only urgent matters, holding meetings online, and utilizing government-owned buildings and warehouses for logistics storage.
"We have asked the General Elections Commission to limit official travel to only what is necessary. Meetings can also be conducted online to save costs," said Ramses.
Additionally, the working period for ad hoc election officers will be shortened from six months to three months to reduce costs, especially in terms of salaries and allowances.
"I have also requested that voting materials, such as ballot boxes and voting booths, be reused if they are still in good condition. They only need to be inspected and repaired if necessary," he added.
Ramses further stated that the Papua Provincial Government continues to coordinate with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Regional Government Budget Team (TAPD) to find appropriate funding solutions.
"Regardless of the situation, the re-election must go on. We will explore alternative funding sources to ensure all election stages proceed as scheduled," he concluded. ***
