JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has moved quickly to follow up on the impact of the fire that occurred in RT 03/RW 05 Dok VIII Pantai, South Jayapura District, in early May 2026. Various response and recovery measures will soon be carried out to assist affected residents.
This commitment was affirmed by Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri when he visited the fire site and met directly with affected residents on Thursday, June 4. The visit was intended to ensure that post-disaster response efforts are running optimally and that residents' needs can be met as soon as possible.
The Governor said he had instructed the Papua Provincial Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency to immediately collect data on all damages and residents' needs as a basis for accelerating the response.
"I have asked the Public Works Agency to immediately carry out data collection, and I will ensure that the response process runs as quickly as possible," Fakhiri said.
He emphasized that the Papua Provincial Government is committed to rebuilding the homes of residents affected by the fire. The reconstruction will consider safety, comfort, and improved housing quality.
"I will speak directly with the Public Works Agency so that this work can be carried out immediately. I will strive to rebuild residents' homes in better condition than before," he said.
In addition to rebuilding residents' homes, the Papua Provincial Government is also preparing temporary housing solutions for those who lost their homes while the reconstruction process is underway.
According to the Governor, the government will seek to place affected residents in proper accommodation, including the possible use of Hotel Numbay facilities if feasible.
"The most important thing is that there were no fatalities in this incident. The government will work to provide temporary housing for residents during the process of rebuilding the damaged homes," he said.
On the same occasion, the Governor also emphasized that the Dok VIII Pantai area has been included in the area management agenda under the Papua Provincial Government's program. Data collection and mapping are currently underway to ensure the entire area can be better organized.
"I already have a program to reorganize this area. In the future, the Dok VIII area will be rearranged to make it more orderly, safe, and comfortable for the community," he explained.
The Papua Provincial Government also assured that all affected residents will receive attention and assistance according to their needs. In addition, the government will work to ensure that eligible residents can be accommodated in housing assistance programs supported by the central government.
"I am here to ensure that affected residents receive assistance and attention from the government," Fakhiri said.
For children affected by the fire, the Papua Provincial Government will immediately assist with educational needs, including school shoes and other learning supplies, so that their education can continue properly.
"For the needs of affected schoolchildren, such as shoes and other learning supplies, we will provide assistance immediately," he concluded. ***
