JAYAPURA – Newly elected Chairman of Papua KONI, Matius D. Fakhiri, called on all members of the sports community to unite in rebuilding Papua's sports achievements ahead of various national events in the coming years.
The statement was made after he was elected by acclamation as Chairman of Papua KONI for the 2026–2030 period during the Papua KONI Provincial Conference, in Jayapura on Friday, June 5, 2026.
According to Fakhiri, sports development must be carried out collectively, starting from the regency and city levels, so that Papuan athletes can once again compete at the national level.
"I will ask all regency governments to support sports development and strengthen sports organizations in their respective regions," he said.
He noted that Papua has a long history as a region that produces outstanding athletes. Therefore, all sports stakeholders need to work together to continue the foundation that has been built so far.
Fakhiri said the existing sports facilities must be optimally utilized to support sustainable athlete development.
In addition to improving achievements, Papua KONI will also encourage the organization of various sports activities that can contribute to regional economic growth.
"We must begin preparing ourselves to face national sports agendas and build achievements gradually," he said.
He expressed hope that support from local governments, sports association officials, and the community would strengthen efforts to develop Papuan athletes over the next five years. ***
