Ia menilai pengembangan rumput laut berpotensi mendukung ekonomi rumah tangga masyarakat sekaligus meningkatkan pendapatan daerah.
YAPEN – The Papua Provincial Government is preparing the development of seaweed downstreaming in Yapen Islands Regency to support the economy of coastal communities and increase the selling value of cultivated products.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri conveyed this during his visit to seaweed farming areas in Sarawandori 1 and 2 Villages on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
According to him, people in the area have long been developing seaweed cultivation, so the government is focusing on strengthening support for production and marketing.
"The people here have long been seaweed farmers, so the government only needs to strengthen its development," he said.
Fakhiri said the provincial government would help build distribution chains and absorb harvests so that community products have better economic value.
In addition, the Papua Provincial Government is also planning to build seaweed processing facilities in the area.
"We want seaweed products here to gain added value through processing," he said.
He assessed that seaweed development has the potential to support household economies while also increasing regional revenue.
The government will also support the provision of seedlings and the development of seaweed-derived products by engaging MSMEs and community groups.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes that the development of the seaweed sector can become one of the economic drivers for coastal communities in Yapen Islands. ***
