JAKARTA – Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri has proposed strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, including the transfer of civil servants from the Papua Provincial Government to the Ministry of Immigration. The proposal was presented during a meeting with Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto in Jakarta on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
According to Fakhiri, the measure could help optimize the use of government personnel in Papua while strengthening immigration services in eastern Indonesia.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to visit the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections today. One of the matters we raised was the large number of employees within the Papua Provincial Government. We are encouraging the transfer of our civil servants to become employees of the Ministry of Immigration," Fakhiri said.
In addition to the civil service issue, Governor Fakhiri also called for greater cooperation to increase Regional Own-Source Revenue through the development of cross-border trade with Pacific countries, particularly Papua New Guinea.
He said Papua's economic potential would grow significantly if local products were marketed not only within the province but also introduced to international markets.
Achieving this goal requires close cooperation with the Directorate General of Immigration, including stronger border-crossing posts to facilitate the movement of goods and people.
"Selling our products within Papua Province alone can already increase regional revenue. It would be even better if we could expand into the Pacific market, including Papua New Guinea," he said.
Fakhiri said Minister Agus Andrianto welcomed the proposals and expressed the ministry's readiness to support various strategic programs of the Papua Provincial Government.
The discussions also covered the involvement of correctional inmates in supporting agricultural and plantation programs currently being promoted by the provincial government.
"Rather than simply waiting until their sentences are completed, they can be involved in productive activities such as food-production brigades. This will provide them with practical skills when they return to society," he said.
Fakhiri also expressed appreciation for Minister Agus Andrianto's support in expanding opportunities for indigenous Papuans within the Ministry of Immigration, including the possibility of holding strategic positions such as regional office heads in the future.
According to Fakhiri, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the representation of indigenous Papuans within the national bureaucracy. ***
