JAYAPURA — Smoke haze covering several areas of Biak has drawn the attention of the Papua Provincial Government. Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri has urged residents across all regencies and cities in Papua to stop using fire to clear gardens or land.
The appeal was made amid hot weather conditions that could increase the risk of forest and land fires.
Fakhiri said he had asked the Papua Regional Disaster Management Agency to directly assess the fire situation in Biak. The government, he said, does not want the fires to spread and cause greater impacts on the community.
“I have asked the Head of the Papua Regional Disaster Management Agency to check the situation. Certainly, we do not want forest fires to occur in Papua Province,” he said.
He noted that weather conditions vary across Papua. Biak is currently experiencing relatively high temperatures, prompting residents to increase their vigilance.
To accelerate efforts to address the smoke haze, Fakhiri plans to convene the Papua Regional Leadership Coordination Forum.
“Tomorrow, I will try to invite all Regional Leadership Coordination Forum members so that we can discuss how to address the smoke haze in Papua. Going forward, we will handle it together and respond quickly,” he said.
However, according to Fakhiri, dealing with forest and land fires cannot rely solely on the government. Community prevention is essential to preventing new fire hotspots.
He urged residents to abandon the practice of burning land when clearing gardens. He said leftover vegetation could be allowed to decompose naturally and become humus that benefits the soil.
“Do not burn land carelessly. This poses a risk of forest fires and will also have an impact on the climate and weather conditions in Papua,” he stressed.
Fakhiri called on the community to work together to protect the environment. Early prevention is considered crucial to ensuring that fires do not develop into disasters that threaten public health, the environment, and air quality in Papua. ***
