JAYAPURA - After several delays, finally 34 Members of the Papuan People's Council (MRP) for the 2023-2028 term were officially inaugurated, on Tuesday (7/11/2023), at the Hall of the Governor's Office, Jayapura City.
More dominated by new faces, the people's representatives representing tribes, religions and customs, were endorsed by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, John Wempi Wetipo,witnessed by the Acting Governor of Papua Muhammad Ridwan Rumasukun and the local Coordination Forum for Regional Leaders.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Wetipo in his direction entrusted four main tasks for members of MRP, first, deepening and understanding the substitution of the Papua Special Autonomy Law.
"Including deepening of Government Regulation Number 54 of 2004 concerning MRP as amended by Government Regulation Number 64 of 2008. The Government Regulation Number 106 of 2021 and Government Regulation Number 107 of 2021,"said Wetipo.
Meanwhile, hecontinued, implementing the laws and regulations and being committed to upholding national values.
"Third, as a Cultural Institution, MRP members should not fall into the realm of practical politics."
"It must also focus on the implementation of authority in the context of protecting the indigenous rights of Papuans, based on respect for customs and culture, empowering women, and strengthening religious life,"he said.
The fourth, according to Wetipo, seeks to improve coordination and cooperation with the Governor and regional representative institutions in encouraging the completion of implementing regulations for the Special Autonomy Law that have not yet been formed.
"Do not forget to encourage the implementing regulations that have been set to be implemented optimally. Moreover, the composition of MRP membership comes from diverse backgrounds, so it is necessary to have a common conception and understanding of duties, authorities, rights and obligations," he said. ***
