JAYAPURA - Acting Papua Governor Muhammad Ridwan Rumasukun is leading the coordination meeting discussing the stages of the 2024 Papuan gubernatorial and deputy governor elections, at the local General Elections Commission Office.
One of the things discussed regarding the requirements for candidates for regional heads is indigenous Papuans.
Governor Ridwan Rumasukun requested the results of the meeting be finalized immediately so that it could become a General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU). On the other hand, to issue technical guidelines that will be used to implement the elections in Papua.
"Earlier, we discussed and gave input to the MRP and KPU related to the regional elections."
"As soon as possible they discuss so that the points can be discussed at the central level regional meeting," explained Ridwan, Tuesday (7/5/2024).
Chairman of the Papua KPU, Steve Dumbon conveyed that the coordination will get input and suggestions from various parties. These inputs and suggestions will be included in the Draft of Election Commission Regulations and technical guidelines for regional elections.
"Now the KPU RI is preparing regulation regarding the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections schedule and providing attention to special regions, such as Aceh, Yogyakarta, Jakarta and Papua," he said.
Especially for Papua, he added, the KPU RI gave attention to one of the requirements for candidates for regional heads should be indigenous Papuans. This is as mandated by Law number 2 of 2021 concerning Special Autonomy.
"The Special Autonomy Law regulates indigenous Papuans in the gubernatorial election, but the regent/mayor is not regulated. The community also asks if the regent / mayor should be indigenous Papuans as what we discussed," said Steve.
Meanwhile, regarding the criteria, it is required for candidates for regional heads, MRP is fully under the authority of MRP.
"The KPU only accepts candidate requirements documents that have received recommendations from MRP," he said. ***
