JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government appeals to citizens not to get involved in online gambling because it will harm themselves and even their families. Meanwhile, for those who are already involved, stop immediately.
"The use of technology in online gambling does not guarantee winning."
"It (online gambling/red) has been regulated with an algorithm that makes players tend to lose repeatedly," explained the Head of the Papua Communication and Informatics Service, Jeri Yudianto in Jayapura, Wednesday (26/6/2024).
According to him, online gambling should not be used as a solution to change fate. Instead, it only causes fatal repercussions such as addiction, job loss, damage to the family, and even legal sanctions.
"Involvement in online gambling can weaken the community's economy because it has an impact on family rifts and an increase in divorce. In addition, it can result in greater social problems," he said.
Data from the Coordinating Ministry of Politics and Legal Affairs shows the involvement of 44 thousand people from 10-20 years old in online gambling. Meanwhile, the involvement of 21-30 years old is 13 percent.
"This means that online gambling does not look at age, involving various groups from the age of 10 to 50 years and above. Especially 80 percent come from the lower middle class," he said.
He added that community participation is needed so that the government's efforts to eradicate online gambling are more optimal.
The Papua Provincial Government also expects residents to report the address of gambling sites or advertisements encountered while using social media. Reports can be addressed to the Papua Communication and Informatics Service or other related parties.
"The government has also formed a Task Force to control and eradicate Online Gambling. Cross-sector collaboration is also carried out by the government to increase education related to the adverse impact of online gambling," he said. ***
