JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government is promoting the development of three Fish Landing Ports (PPI) as a strategic step to enhance the regional economy.
These three PPIs are regarded as having significant potential to increase local revenue while also improving the welfare of coastal communities. The Head of the Papua Province Marine and Fisheries Office, Iman Djuniawal, stated that PPI Hamadi in Jayapura City, PPI Depapre in Jayapura Regency, and PPI Fandoi in Biak Numfor Regency will be the primary focus of development in 2025.
They were chosen for their existing infrastructure and strategic locations that support capture fisheries activities.
“These three ports are beginning to show promising signs. If managed effectively, they could become sources of local revenue while also creating jobs in the fisheries sector,” said Iman.
He explained that developing fishing ports involves not only adding physical facilities but also comprehensive area planning.
At PPI Hamadi, for instance, a fuel station for fishermen (SPBN), a monitoring building, and a culinary center have been established to support the economic activities of fishermen and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, at PPI Depapre, the government continues to cultivate cross-sector partnerships to make the area more appealing to both fishermen and investors.
Iman noted that the coastal area of Depapre has untapped fishery potential.
As for PPI Fandoi in Biak Numfor, development is already underway and will be further strengthened to accommodate more local fishermen.
“Papua has a long coastline, but not all regions have adequate fishing ports. This is what we are gradually working to improve,” Iman stated. ***
