JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government is intensifying its efforts to prevent the transmission of tuberculosis (TB) by emphasizing the importance of public education and lifestyle modifications. This initiative was highlighted during the commemoration of World TB Day, held in Jayapura on Friday (April 11, 2025).
Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, emphasized that Indonesia currently ranks second in the world for the highest number of TB cases, with Papua alone accounting for over 11,000 cases.
"This commemoration reminds us to reflect on the past and plan for the future. We must take preventive action," he stated.
According to Ramses, lifestyle factors play a significant role in the spread of TB. “TB bacteria thrive in damp environments. Children still sleep on the floor, people smoke, and other risky behaviors persist. Education must be strengthened so people understand the importance of maintaining their health,” he added.
He emphasized that once someone is diagnosed with TB, immediate treatment is essential to prevent further transmission.
“Treatment takes a long time—at least six months. Therefore, quick action and monitoring are necessary,” Ramses said.
To enhance early detection, the Papua Provincial Government continues to implement the Free Health Check-up (PKG) program in various regions, including at the district level.
Acting Head of the Papua Health Office, Ary Pongtiku, added that consistent prevention and treatment efforts will directly impact the reduction of TB cases in the future.
“Through this commemoration, we aim to find and treat as many cases as possible until recovery,” he said. ***
