JAYAPURA– The Papua Provincial Government emphasized the significance of controlling inflation as a way to sustain the public's purchasing power. It was stated that local governments possess the authority to manage the prices of goods and services within Papua. Andry, the Head of the Economic Affairs and Development Administration Bureau of Papua, stated that the government’s role is to maintain price stability through regional inflation control.
“This is one of the responsibilities of local governments — to regulate prices in Papua. Regarding purchasing power, I will need to investigate further the factors contributing to its decline,” he remarked in Jayapura on Monday (April 14, 2025).
He mentioned that inflation control is executed by participating in national coordination meetings on inflation and implementing policies at the regional level via the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID).
“We take part in national inflation coordination meetings daily and implement inflation control policies locally through TPID, which includes both High-Level TPID Meetings and more technical meetings aimed at maintaining price stability,” he explained.
According to him, routine price reports are published weekly and are also released by the Statistics Agency (BPS). “From an inflation standpoint, Papua Province remains within the government’s target range.”
He stressed that price control is a regional authority. “If prices are kept stable, purchasing power will also be preserved. Essentially, by maintaining price stability, we hope that purchasing power will remain consistent as well,” he stated. ***
