JAYAPURA– The Papua Provincial Government stated the region’s development performance in 2024 showed positive results. Several macroeconomic indicators improved, including a decline in poverty rates and an increase in the Human Development Index (HDI).
This was conveyed during a plenary session of the Papua Provincial House of Representatives (DPR Papua), which included the presentation of the 2024 Regional Head Accountability Report (LKPJ), held on Tuesday (April 15, 2025). The speech of the Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, was delivered by Acting Regional Secretary Yohanes Walilo.
“The macro performance achievements reflect the overall success of regional governance,” said Walilo.
Some key indicators achieved in 2024 include an increase in Papua’s HDI from 73.23 to 73.83. The poverty rate dropped significantly from 26.03 percent to 17.26 percent, representing a relative decline of 33.69 percent.
Meanwhile, the open unemployment rate also declined from 6.90 percent in 2023 to 6.48 percent in 2024. However, economic growth experienced a slight slowdown, decreasing from 4.22 percent to 4.11 percent.
Per capita income rose from 78.05 percent to 81 percent. Income inequality also decreased from 6.25 percent to 4.01 percent, marking a reduction of approximately 35.84 percent.
The Papua Provincial Government also reported on the evaluation of its 2024 program achievements. Of the 26 targets set, 18 were categorized as highly successful, 5 as successful, 1 as moderately successful, and 2 as unsuccessful.
According to Walilo, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of program implementation and the collaborative efforts among stakeholders in supporting Papua’s development. ***
