JAYAPURA – The commemoration of Kartini Day, held by the Papua Provincial Government on Thursday (April 24, 2025) at Sasana Krida, served as an important moment of reflection for Papuan women.
Coinciding with the Halal bihalal celebration, Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, invited all parties to embrace Kartini’s spirit as a role model in everyday life.
In his speech, Ramses highlighted the increasingly significant role of women in Papua’s development, especially within government institutions.
He noted an increase in female representation in key positions within the Papua Provincial Government, such as department heads and assistant roles.
“Women are appointed as officials not out of pity, but because of their capabilities. This proves that Papuan women are increasingly able to compete and take on strategic roles in regional development,” said Ramses.
Ramses further pointed out that the culture that has traditionally placed women in subordinate roles is gradually changing.
“It is not impossible that one day a Papuan woman could become the Regional Secretary, or even the Governor. This is a dream we must strive for together,” he added.
According to Ramses, Kartini Day should symbolize broader change in the pursuit of gender equality in Papua.
He expressed hope that Kartini’s spirit would continue to inspire Papuan women to keep striving and not be afraid to step forward as future leaders. ***
