JAYAPURA – Assistant I of the Papua Regional Secretariat, Yohanes Walilo, has requested support from the central government to accelerate the development of digital infrastructure in Papua's remote areas. The request was conveyed in his remarks during the working visit of the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, in Jayapura on Wednesday (May 21, 2025). The Deputy Minister's visit coincided with the Indosat AI Experience Center launch and the “Kitorang Bisa AI” workshop.
“We are asking for support in accelerating digital infrastructure development in remote, coastal, and river basin areas, such as in Mamberamo Raya Regency, Waropen Regency, and the Yapen Islands,” he said. In addition, he highlighted the need to enhance digital access capacity in Jayapura Regency, Keerom Regency, Biak Regency, Supiori Regency, and Jayapura City.
“Equitable digital infrastructure is a key requirement so that people in all corners of Papua can enjoy equal access to information technology services,” he added. Walilo also expressed hope that the central government would allocate a special budget for information technology development in Papua Province.
“This funding would catalyze digital literacy programs, youth talent training, strengthening digital MSMEs, and expanding internet networks to traditional villages,” said Walilo. He also called for attention to inclusive partnerships among the government, mobile network operators, and local communities. To ensure digital transformation is not just a technological project, but also to reach and empower all communities. ***
