JAYAPURA – Papua Governor Matius Fakhiri emphasized the importance of utilizing local potential as a key strategy to accelerate development despite the province’s limited budget. This approach has been a central focus of his administration since the beginning of his term.
Fakhiri explained that every village, district, and city in Papua possesses resources that can be optimized — ranging from agricultural products and handicrafts to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“Before products are sent outside the province, we must ensure that the added value is first enjoyed by local communities,” he said.
The Governor also urged all regional government agencies to work efficiently and accountably, ensuring that every rupiah spent delivers maximum benefits for the people and stimulates grassroots economic growth.
“We want development to move quickly, but it must remain well-targeted,” Fakhiri stated.
To support this goal, the provincial government has begun conducting a comprehensive audit of governance and financial management systems. The objective is to identify areas requiring improvement and to assign capable officials who can take swift and effective action.
Coordination with national ministries and government institutions is also a priority to ensure that Papua’s development programs are not constrained by regional budget limitations. Fakhiri emphasized that this collaborative approach will also help accelerate progress in infrastructure development and healthcare services, particularly in remote areas.
The Governor added that partnerships with the banking sector, private enterprises, and other institutions are being developed to ensure that government programs and services reach all levels of society.
“This strategy delivers direct benefits to the people while demonstrating how a region can move forward by maximizing its own local potential,” he concluded. ***
