JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government is encouraging regencies and cities to take advantage of the thematic aquaculture program offered by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The national program is considered important for strengthening fishery production in the region.
Head of the Papua Marine and Fisheries Office, Iman Djuniawal, said that local governments need to actively propose locations to be included in the limited program allocation.
"This program has a quota of around 200 locations, so regions must immediately submit their proposals," he said in Jayapura on Wednesday (April 22, 2026).
He explained that the thematic aquaculture program is aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector, especially as an alternative to capture fisheries, whose yields are not always stable.
"Aquaculture is becoming an alternative to maintain food availability, including supporting raw material needs for the Free Nutritious Meals program," he said.
The commodities to be developed include freshwater fish such as tilapia and catfish, which can be cultivated in various areas.
In addition, the program's management is designed to be connected with Red and White village cooperatives so that the distribution of production results can reach the community level.
"It is hoped that management through village cooperatives will strengthen distribution and increase benefits for the community," he said. ***
