JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to regulating illegal mining activities still operating in the region.
Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, assured that during his tenure, he has not issued any new mining permits.
"I am very cautious when it comes to mining permits. To this day, I have neither issued nor proposed any new mining permits to the central government," Ramses stated in Jayapura on Thursday (March 27, 2025).
His statement was in response to a report from Waropen Regent, FX Mote, regarding illegal mining activities in Wapoga District.
The Papua Provincial Government will conduct site identification to determine whether the mining activities are within protected forest areas or have official permits.
In addition to Waropen, Ramses noted that illegal mining operations have also been found in Keerom Regency.
The local government, along with relevant agencies, will conduct inspections to ensure compliance with existing regulations.
According to Ramses, natural resource management must consider legal and environmental aspects.
He emphasized that any form of unauthorized exploitation would be dealt with by the law. ***
