JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of life for residents in the coastal areas of South Jayapura through the revitalization of settlements in Weref, Pulau Kosong, and Kayu Pulo. This initiative is part of an integrated development strategy that combines housing, infrastructure, and local economic empowerment.
Papua Governor Matius Fakhiri inspected the conditions of the settlements in these areas and emphasized that government intervention is urgently needed. “The government’s presence is not only about building houses, but also about ensuring that residents have access to basic facilities and better economic opportunities,” Fakhiri said on Saturday (22/11/2025).
As a concrete step, the Papua Provincial Government has proposed a housing assistance program totaling 14,000 units to the central government. The assistance includes the construction of new houses, renovations, and subsidized mortgage schemes intended for coastal residents.
In addition, Fakhiri noted that coordination with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is essential to increase fishermen’s productivity. Support programs include the provision of fisheries infrastructure and training to enhance economic activities in coastal areas.
The government also plans to build a connecting bridge between Weref and Kayu Pulo to support mobility and connectivity among settlements. Fakhiri added that Pulau Kosong and Kayu Pulo have marine tourism potential that can be developed into recreational destinations and integrated fish-farming zones.
“The revitalization of these areas involves several ministries, including Public Works and Housing, Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Tourism, and the National Population and Family Planning Agency. This strategy is expected to accelerate the recovery of slum areas while improving the living standards of coastal communities,” Fakhiri said.
The Governor also stated that similar efforts will be undertaken in the settlements of Kayu Batu through Dok IX in North Jayapura, as well as in other regencies such as Yapen Islands, Waropen, Biak, and Supiori. The provincial government aims to ensure that development aligns with the community’s actual needs and opens new economic access through roads, agriculture, plantations, and localized transmigration. ***
