JAYAPURA – Acting Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), B. Wisnu Raditya, stated that five regions in Papua Province are at risk of flooding due to hydrometeorological conditions.

These regions include Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Keerom Regency, Mamberamo Raya Regency, Waropen, and Sarmi Regency.

To anticipate potential disasters, the Papua Regional Disaster Management Agency has coordinated some preventive measures to be implemented by the Regional Disaster Management Agency in the respective regencies and cities.

“We have informed all Regional Disaster Management Agencies to remain vigilant, and we have also asked them to educate communities about the causes of flooding and the steps that need to be taken to anticipate it—as well as to ensure community preparedness,” Wisnu said.

The public education efforts include preparing necessary equipment, securing important documents, avoiding littering, and refraining from cutting down trees in hilly areas.

“Because the flooding that occurred in several regions in Western Indonesia, such as Tapanuli and Sibolga, was caused by deforestation,” he added.

Regarding hydrometeorological disasters, Wisnu urged the public to obtain information and follow instructions only from reliable, credible sources. ***
