JAYAPURA — Papua Governor Matius Fakhiri inaugurated the coordinators of AIDS Care Volunteers from nine regencies/cities in Papua on Monday (1/12/2025) at Sasana Krida, the Governor’s Office. The inauguration marks a strategic step by the Papua Provincial Government to strengthen HIV/AIDS response networks, including in remote regions.
Fakhiri emphasized the vital role of volunteers as the spearhead of education, assistance, and services for People Living with HIV. “Volunteers are not merely helpers; they are the frontline ensuring that health services and education reach villages, valleys, and highlands,” Fakhiri said.
In his directives, the Governor urged volunteers to strengthen their integrity, professionalism, and discipline. He noted that close coordination with the AIDS Prevention Commission and health service facilities is crucial to ensuring program effectiveness. He also highlighted the importance of support from regency/city governments in the form of budgeting, organizational structure, and coordination mechanisms.
“The burden of the HIV epidemic in Papua remains high. With strong synergy, we can accelerate education efforts, expand services, and eliminate stigma against People Living with HIV,” Fakhiri stated.
The Papua Provincial Government also continues to ensure support for People Living with HIV through assistance programs, logistics distribution, and the availability of ARV medication. The Governor called on all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration to achieve a healthy, smart, and productive Papua, free from HIV infections. ***
