TIMIKA – Regional governments across the Land of Papua discussed strengthening fiscal policies and the implementation of Special Autonomy (Otsus) during the Strategic Coordination Forum for the Acceleration of Papua Development held in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Monday (May 11, 2026).
The forum brought together governors from across Papua to align development directions and discuss fiscal challenges faced by regions following the expansion of new autonomous regions.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri stated that strengthening Special Autonomy regulations is necessary to ensure that regional development can proceed in a more stable and sustainable manner.
"We hope that the Special Autonomy regulations can provide fiscal certainty for the regions," he said.
According to him, development implementation in Papua requires strong fiscal support so that priority programs can continue and directly benefit the community.
In addition, the forum also discussed the importance of equal distribution of natural resource benefits across all regions of Papua so that development can take place more evenly.
"If there is a source of revenue in one region of Papua, ideally, the benefits of development should be shared," Fakhiri said.
During the meeting, regional leaders also discussed strengthening interregional connectivity through the development of transportation infrastructure and interregional links.
Meanwhile, Central Papua Governor Meki Nawipa emphasized that all provinces in the Land of Papua need to move forward with a shared spirit of development.
"Special Autonomy must become an instrument to accelerate the welfare of the Papuan people," he said.
The coordination forum also discussed strengthening the management system of Special Autonomy funds so that development programs can be implemented more effectively, transparently, and accurately targeted toward the people of Papua. ***
