JAYAPURA – December 4 is commemorated as World Noken Day, marking the recognition of Papua’s Noken as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The Noken has been listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage roster since 2012.
Acting Regional Secretary of Papua, Christian Sohilait, said that all regencies and cities have acknowledged the Noken as an important cultural heritage item.
Therefore, many local governments often use it as an accessory during official activities, including when welcoming guests.
“We appreciate the Noken as a world cultural heritage item; therefore, I urge the heads of regional apparatus organizations to use the Noken as an accessory during seminars, training, and other events,” he said.
He added that the local government also provides space for Papuan women who sell Noken.
“I urge everyone to use Noken at every opportunity. This is also to help improve the economy of the Papuan women who sell Noken,” he said.
He further encouraged the Papuan community to continue using Noken and to purchase Noken made by the Papuan women. ***
